Parrots & Other Pets

dog with a parrot

A lot of times, people who express interest in purchasing a parrot for a pet already have dogs or cats or even both. What stops them though is the fear that their dogs or cats will not be able to live with a parrot without harming it and vice versa.

Truth is, different kinds of animals have been known to be able to live peacefully with one another. Even known adversaries like dogs and cats can stay in one household and enjoy the attention of their owners without either one of them having to assert oneself over the other.

The unifying element in all these and the key force that controls everyone’s behavior and keeps everything in order is, of course, you, the pets’ master. As the head of the pack (for dogs) and the leader of the flock (for birds) you determine the manner by which these animals interact with one another within the house.

The manner by which a dog or cat reacts to the introduction of a new pet bird is determined by you. It is always best to go slow when introducing the new member of the household. Do it in a relaxed and playful manner so that neither one of the animals feel threatened.

Bear in mind, these animals only become agitated and hostile when they feel that their territorial rights are being taken from them and when they feel jealous. Just like when dealing with your children, make sure you establish to everyone that you are in charge and that each one will be given his/her fair share of attention.

Dogs will not feel intimidated if they know they are not in charge. The same is true of cats and even birds. Keep the situation under control by insuring that everyone understands each one’s role. This is the best way for you to keep peace and order within the household.
In summary, therefore, we can say that it is possible to keep several different types of animals as household pets. Just insure that the following guidelines are in place and adhered to strictly:

•Each animal should have its own living quarters where its own individual needs are attended to.
•Do not mix different species of animals during exercise or play time.
•Never let your animals stay together in one place unattended. Always supervise their activities.
•Make sure your pets are situated in quarters where other household pets cannot harm them so that they do not feel threatened.
•Wash your hands after playing with different species of animals to remove each animal’s scent and to avoid the spread of diseases. Sometimes the scent of another animal may agitate the animal you are playing with at the moment.
•When going out to work and leaving your pets at home, make sure that your bird’s cage is locked and that it is situated in a place where neither the dog nor the cat can place its paws inside the cage. For your peace of mind, it would be much better if you could situate each of these pets in different rooms. Cats are predatory by nature and so are dogs. It is better to keep the bird out of their sight.
Yes, different types of animals can live together in one household. You, as the head honcho, are required, however, to insure each animal’s right to eat, breathe, live peacefully, and be loved tremendously. The quality of their future lies in your hands.
